Fashion Photography

Fashion photography is a genre of photography related to clothing and other fashion items. It is usually conducted for advertisements or fashion magazines, some of which include; Vogue, Vanity Fair and Allure. Fashion photography made its first appearance in French magazines such as La mode practique. In 1909, Condé Nast took over Vogue magazine and also contributed to the beginnings of fashion photography. Photographers such as Edward Steichen, George Hoyningen-Huene, Horst P. Horst and Cecil Beaton also helped to transform the genre into an outstanding art form. Europe, and especially Germany, were for a short time the leaders in fashion photography. Richard Avedon revolutionised fashion photography and redefined the role of the fashion photographer, in the post-World War II era with his imaginative images of the modern woman. Today, his work is being exhibited in the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach, FL. This exhibition features more than 200 works and spans Avedon’s entire career, including vintage prints, contact sheets, and original magazines from Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and The New Yorker.

Below are some examples of some Fashion photographers work and some information about them:

As a result of those black-and-white portraits, his work caught the attention of art director Marc Ascoli, who commissioned Nick to shoot the 1986 catalogue of avant-garde Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto in collaboration with renowned graphic designer Peter Saville. Since this first foray into fashion photography, he has shot both editorial and advertising projects for clients including Alexander McQueen, Audi, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Shiatzy Chen, Jil Sander, Lancôme, Levi Strauss, Martine Sitbon, Mercedes-Benz, Royal Ballet, Royal Opera House, Swarovski and Yves Saint Laurent.
In 2001 he shot his first music video ever, the controversial Pagan Poetry video, for avant-pop star Björk. In 2011 he directed the video for Lady Gaga's single "Born This Way".
